Google unveils Gemini 3.5 and Gemini Omni at I/O 2026

Google held its I/O developer conference in May 2026, using the event to introduce Gemini 3.5, a new model line built around what the company calls “agentic” capabilities, and a separate model named Gemini Omni designed to generate video, audio and other content from a mix of different inputs. Executives framed the event as Google’s clearest statement yet that its products are being redesigned around AI agents capable of completing multi-step tasks with minimal human input, rather than simply answering one question at a time.
Alongside the new models, Google announced updates across its consumer and developer tools, including changes to its search experience, new shopping features built around AI-assisted checkout, and hardware previews tied to upcoming smart glasses. The conference has become one of the year’s biggest showcases for where Google believes AI is heading next, and this year’s announcements suggested the company is betting heavily on AI systems that act on a user’s behalf rather than just responding to prompts, a direction rivals have also been pursuing.
