S&P 500 notches its 25th record high of 2026 on earnings and falling oil prices

The S&P 500 closed at its 25th record high of the year in early August 2026, capping a four-day rally worth roughly $3.7 trillion in added market value, driven by a combination of strong corporate earnings and a pullback in oil prices. Second-quarter earnings were on pace to grow around 29% year-over-year, with analysts raising their forward earnings-per-share estimates at what one strategist called a “stunning clip.”

The record marked a notable slowdown compared to the index’s pace in prior years, 39 record closes over the course of 2025 and 57 in 2024, even as 2026’s gains continued to build steadily. A separate survey highlighted a less celebratory side of the rally: a growing link between the boom in retail day trading and rising reports of financial stress and feelings of failure among young male traders drawn in by the market’s momentum.
