Revolut Wants to Become a Global Technology Company, Moving Beyond Its Banking Roots

Revolut is planning to expand beyond financial services and develop a broader portfolio of technology products, according to comments by chief executive Nik Storonsky on October 9.

The company, which has become one of Europe’s most highly valued private technology businesses, is seeking to use its customer base and transaction data to develop proprietary artificial intelligence models and support expansion into new markets. Reuters reported that Revolut processes tens of millions of transactions each day.

From financial app to technology platform

Revolut began by Revolut Wants to Become a Global Technology Company, Moving Beyond Its Banking Roots

offering digital financial services, including payments and currency exchange. It has since expanded into a wider range of products and markets.

The company’s next ambition is broader: to become a technology business operating at a scale comparable with major US technology companies.

That is a significant goal. Financial services remain highly regulated, while expansion into other technology sectors may require different expertise, partnerships and business models.

Transaction data creates opportunities

A financial platform can observe patterns in spending, payments and customer activity.

When handled lawfully and with appropriate safeguards, such information may help identify trends and improve certain services.

Revolut says it is using its transaction data to develop proprietary AI models.

However, financial data is sensitive. Customers need confidence that their information is protected and that its use complies with privacy rules and financial regulation.

Trust is essential

Rapid growth does not remove the need for strong controls.

Revolut has faced regulatory scrutiny, including a fine from Lithuania’s central bank in 2025 over shortcomings in transaction-monitoring controls. In September 2026, the company also reported an incident in which customer data was mistakenly sent to people posing as government investigators.

The company said customer funds and systems were not affected by that incident, according to Reuters reporting.

Such incidents matter because digital financial services depend on trust. Customers need to know that their money, identity and personal information are handled securely.

International expansion increases complexity

Revolut has been pursuing additional regulatory permissions and expanding its international presence.

Each market has its own rules for banking, payments, consumer protection and data handling. Operating across jurisdictions can create opportunities, but it also increases compliance costs and operational complexity.

Expansion into new technology services may introduce additional requirements.

Can it compete with major technology companies?

The ambition to reach the scale of major US technology companies is substantial.

Those businesses operate across global markets, invest heavily in research and development and benefit from large ecosystems of products and services.

Revolut has a strong digital customer base, but it will need to demonstrate that it can build products beyond finance that attract sustained demand.

AI may help the company develop new services, but it does not guarantee commercial success.

What this means for financial technology

Revolut’s strategy reflects a broader trend in which digital financial companies are attempting to become wider technology platforms.

The opportunity is to use existing customer relationships to offer more services.

The challenge is to expand without weakening the reliability and trust that made the original business successful.
