Compass closes long-anticipated acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate

Brokerage giant Compass closed its long-anticipated acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate in January 2026, a deal the company said would drive cost synergies and long-term value in the years ahead. The acquisition capped what Compass described as the strongest fourth quarter and full-year performance in its history, despite a persistently slow US housing market and elevated mortgage rates throughout 2025.
The deal significantly expanded Compass’s brokerage network and set the stage for further moves the company made in the weeks that followed, positioning it as the country’s largest residential brokerage by a wide margin. Compass CEO Robert Reffkin framed the acquisition as central to the company’s broader strategy of challenging how the industry’s largest players, including Zillow and the multiple listing services, controlled the flow of property listings.
