India Defeats Pakistan to Retain Asian Games Cricket Gold in Nagoya

India has retained the men’s cricket gold medal at the Asian Games after defeating Pakistan by 19 runs in a high-scoring T20 final in Nagoya, Japan.

India scored 211 for six from its 20 overs before Pakistan responded with 192 for six. The victory gives India consecutive Asian Games gold medals in men’s cricket after the sport’s previous edition in Hangzhou.

The final brought together two of cricket’s biggest rivals in a match that attracted considerable attention despite the relatively small crowd at the converted baseball venue.

India makes a fast start

India’s innings was built around an aggressive opening phase.

Abhishek Sharma scored 61 from 35 balls after reaching his half-century in only 20 deliveries, giving India the momentum it needed during the first part of the innings.

India reached 100 runs after just 55 balls before Pakistan’s bowlers managed to slow the scoring rate.

Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer were dismissed relatively quickly, but India still had enough batting depth to produce a powerful finish.

Varma and Dube change the final

Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube provided the decisive acceleration late in the innings.

The pair added 62 runs from five overs for the sixth wicket, allowing India to reach 211 for six.

It was the highest total of the tournament and gave Pakistan a demanding target in a final where the margin for error was small.

The performance also demonstrated the depth available to India’s T20 squad, with several players contributing despite Pakistan taking control of parts of the middle overs.

Pakistan fights until the final overs

Pakistan’s response was led by Hasan Nawaz, who scored 96 and kept the chase alive almost until the end.

The team reached 192 for six after 20 overs, finishing 19 runs short of India’s total.

Nawaz’s innings was one of the outstanding individual performances of the tournament, but Pakistan could not find enough support around him to maintain the required scoring rate.

India’s bowlers managed the final overs effectively and prevented the chase from becoming a last-ball contest.

More than another medal

The victory gives India a second consecutive Asian Games cricket gold medal.

The sport’s presence at the Asian Games is particularly important because cricket has a much larger professional ecosystem in South Asia than in most of the other countries participating in the competition.

Matches between India and Pakistan also carry a significance that extends well beyond the tournament itself.

For the Asian Games, the final demonstrated the audience potential of cricket when two of the sport’s biggest rivals meet in a medal match.

Cricket’s place in the Asian Games

The 2026 tournament also arrives at a time when cricket is expanding its presence on the international multi-sport calendar.

The sport is set to remain part of the Olympic programme at Los Angeles 2028, increasing the importance of competitions that bring cricket to audiences beyond its traditional markets.

India’s victory in Nagoya therefore adds another chapter to the sport’s international development.

For Pakistan, the silver medal ends a tournament that produced a strong run but ultimately fell short in the final.

For India, the result provides another international title and confirms its position as the current Asian Games men’s cricket champion.
