Alex Tuch Leads Washington to Victory as the NHL Season Begins With a Statement Win

The Washington Capitals opened their NHL season with a 5-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes, in a game that also marked Alex Tuch’s debut for his new team.
Tuch scored twice in the first period as Washington built an early advantage and never gave Carolina the opportunity to recover.

Tuch makes an immediate impact
Tuch scored two goals in the opening period of his first game with Washington.
His early contribution gave the Capitals control of the game and allowed the team to play from a position of strength.
Jakob Chychrun also scored and added an assist, while Cole Hutson and Ryan Leonard completed Washington’s scoring.
The Capitals’ offensive performance was supported by goaltender Logan Thompson, who stopped 31 shots.
Carolina’s title defence begins with two losses
The Hurricanes entered the season as defending Stanley Cup champions.
Their opening results, however, have been difficult.
Carolina lost its first two games of the season, including the 5-2 defeat against Washington.
Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven scored for the Hurricanes, but the team struggled to generate enough offensive pressure against Washington’s defence.
Goaltender Brandon Bussi made 22 saves.
Ovechkin begins another season
Alex Ovechkin, now entering his 22nd NHL season, recorded an assist for Washington.
The veteran remains one of the defining figures of the modern NHL and continues to compete at the highest level despite his long career.
His presence alongside younger players such as Hutson and Leonard illustrates the mixture of experience and emerging talent within Washington’s current roster.
Boston also opens with consecutive wins
Elsewhere, the Boston Bruins defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in overtime.
JJ Peterka scored the decisive goal with 1:39 remaining in overtime, giving Boston its second victory in two games.
Peterka, who recently joined Boston, has now scored in both of his first two games for the club.
David Pastrnak assisted on Boston’s final two goals, while Elias Lindholm scored with 1:38 left in regulation to force overtime.
Rookie James Hagens also scored his first NHL goal. (reuters.com)
New York starts with a shutout
The New York Rangers also opened their campaign with a victory, beating Detroit 2-0.
Dylan Garand made 22 saves for his first NHL shutout.
Sean Durzi scored during the first period, while Eeli Tolvanen added an empty-net goal.
Detroit’s opening game was affected by the absence of several important players, including Dylan Larkin, who was sidelined with an upper-body injury.
A new NHL season begins
The opening results provide only an early snapshot of the season, but they already show how quickly new rosters can change the competitive picture.
Washington has begun with an impressive victory over the defending champions, Boston has won its first two games and New York has opened with a shutout.
For Carolina, the challenge is now to recover quickly from its opening losses and begin the defence of its Stanley Cup title.
With a long regular season ahead, the first weekend will not determine the final standings.
It does, however, provide the first indication of how new lineups, new players and returning champions are adapting to the demands of another NHL campaign.
