US retail ecommerce sales hit record $326.7 billion in Q1 2026

US retail ecommerce sales reached a seasonally adjusted record of $326.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, according to Census Bureau data, up 9.8% year-over-year and representing 16.9% of total retail sales, an increase from 15.9% a year earlier. Online sales grew roughly two and a half times faster than total retail sales over the same period.

The quarterly figure extended a longer growth trend that saw full-year 2025 US retail ecommerce sales reach $1.23 trillion, according to the same Census Bureau reporting released in March 2026. The consistent outpacing of online sales growth relative to overall retail growth reflected a broader, ongoing shift in how US consumers were distributing their spending between physical and digital retail channels.
